Tips for a Stress-Free Experience with Your Little Ones
As a mom of two little boys and a family photographer, I know first-hand how daunting it can feel to prepare for a family photoshoot. You’re excited about capturing these beautiful moments, but at the same time, you're thinking about all the little details: What should everyone wear? Will the kids cooperate? How do we make this fun instead of stressful?
Here at Auburn Photography, my goal is to make your family session as relaxed and enjoyable as possible, so you can simply focus on the love and connection you share. That’s where the magic happens! To help you get the most out of your shoot, I’ve put together some simple, stress-free tips to ensure your family photoshoot goes smoothly and that we create memories you’ll cherish for years to come.
1. Keep Outfits Simple, Comfortable, and Coordinated (But Not Matching!)
When it comes to choosing outfits, simplicity is key. Stick to neutral tones, soft pastels, or earthy colours that work well together without being too matchy-matchy.
Think of coordinating, not copying. This will give a more natural and timeless feel to your photos. Try to avoid loud patterns or logos that can be distracting.
Also, make sure everyone is comfortable. If your little one is fussy in their favourite outfit at home, chances are they’ll feel the same during the shoot. Let them wear something they feel good in, and the natural smiles will follow!
2. Get the Kids Involved
Photoshoots with kids can feel unpredictable, but that's what makes them so special. Embrace the fun!
To help them feel more relaxed, talk to your kids about the session in advance. Tell them it’s going to be a fun time where they get to play, laugh, and just be themselves. Some families even bring along a favourite toy or stuffed animal – and yes, we can include it in a shot or two!
Let them have input in small decisions, like picking between two outfit options or bringing along a small prop. This will help them feel like part of the process and more excited about the day.
3. Plan Around Your Family’s Schedule
We’ll aim to schedule the shoot at a time when your little ones are usually well-rested and fed. For younger children, try to avoid nap times or mealtimes.
A well-rested child is usually a happy one, and that translates to beautiful, relaxed photos.
If your session is early in the morning or late afternoon (when lighting is best!), make sure to bring along snacks or a little treat to keep their energy up. I also encourage parents to bring water and any essentials that will make the kids feel more at ease.
4. Don’t Stress About Perfection
Your family photoshoot is not about perfection; it’s about connection. Kids are going to be kids! Whether they’re laughing, playing, or running around, these moments make for the most genuine, heartfelt images. Don’t worry if they aren’t sitting still or following a script – those candid moments often become the best memories.
As your photographer, I’ll capture the beautiful chaos and all the love that flows through your family. Trust the process and allow yourselves to enjoy the moment.
6. Leave the Heavy Lifting to Me
One of the biggest stressors for parents can be worrying about how their kids will behave during the shoot. Don’t worry – I’ve got this!
Having worked with many families, I know how to bring out the best in children and make them feel comfortable in front of the camera. I’ll guide you through each step, offering gentle direction while letting those natural moments unfold.
